What fiscal irresponsibility? We are talking about to the tune of over $750,000 – more than three-quarters of $1,000,000 – to hold a special election on March 19, 2019, to vote on one MARTA-related question with two sentences.
Yes, just only two short sentences.
“Gwinnett County has executed a contract for the provision of transit service, dated as of August 2, 2018. Shall this contract be approved?” Yes or No.
With an opportunity to have these two sentences on the November 2018 ballot that had record-breaking voter participation, who would hold a special election?
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners did just that and scheduled a special election for Tuesday, March 19, 2019. Shame on all of them for wasting taxpayer dollars and shame on taxpayers for continuing to elect inept politicians.
But why did the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners choose to have a special election and waste over $750,000?
From school improvements in targeted communities, to viable help for the homeless, and on to the need for more African-American respectful engagement, Gwinnett County has many issues that $750,000 could address that would benefit a large number of voters in the county.
Gwinnett County has had an opportunity to be a part of MARTA for more than 40 years but did not participate because of the fear of non-whites coming to the county by public transportation to steal and commit other crimes. So what happened in 2018 to change that perspective? Why a special election? What is really going on with the whites who control Gwinnett County?
MARTA must expand and Gwinnett County is critical to that progress. But something is just not right with the sudden moves of Charlotte Nash, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and the white male business owners who really control the county.
Regardless of the reasons why Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners made the dumbest and most costly move in history to hold a special election for one question, will Gwinnetians come out and vote yes?
